Voting for WEEI’s Friday Nights Lights contest closes next Friday, and Grafton so far has an astounding lead — with each “star” representing 100 votes, Grafton has 84 stars right now, or 8,400 votes!
Pembroke High School has 19 stars, followed by Beverly High School with 14. There are 14 schools competing for the prize, a brand new installed sports lighting system for their youth football league field. If I’m reading the rules right, the prize goes to whichever name is drawn, not necessarily the town with the most votes, but Grafton definitely has the odds on its side with so many votes in the hat.
Grafton’s entry is dedicated to the memory of Kevin Vulter, who died in a car crash back in September. Vulter, 20, a former Grafton High football player, was a big supporter of having permanent lights for Grafton’s football field and the essay supporting the town’s bid was written by Ryan Vulter, his brother and a co-captain of GHS’ football team.
